Access and Authorised Users

Do I need an appointment to access my box?

The short answer

That depends on Knox's current appointment policy, which can differ by service and type of visit. You do not need an appointment to access your safe deposit box during opening hours. Collection of purchased Krugerrands is by appointment only, visits to items in safe custody need at least 24 hours' notice, and cash-in-transit visits must be approved in writing at least 48 hours in advance. Even where routine access is available without booking, it is sensible to call ahead for a first visit, a visit by a new authorised user, an executor's visit or any visit when you plan to move a large number of items.

Why appointments matter for vault visits

Every box visit involves identity verification, staff assistance in the vault and the use of a private area. Booking ahead lets the facility plan for this, which can shorten your wait and make sure the right staff and paperwork are ready. Some providers require appointments for all box visits; others accept routine visits during access hours and ask for bookings only in particular situations.

Visits that usually need extra preparation

  • Your first visit after signing, when access is activated and any enrolment is completed.
  • A first visit by a newly authorised user.
  • Visits by an executor, an agent or anyone acting under a power of attorney.
  • Joint-access visits, where two people must attend together.
  • Upgrades, downgrades or closing a box, when contents are moved.

Knox's arrangements

Knox sets its own policy on appointments and may apply it differently to box access, bullion transactions and other services. Visits take place during Knox's hours. Knox is open Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 17:00. If you are unsure, contact Knox before you set out. You can call Knox on 011 646 1919.

Planning a smooth visit

Allow enough time, bring the identification Knox requires and avoid leaving your visit to the last minute before a deadline. If you need an item for a particular date, plan your visit well before it. Where two people must attend together, agree a time that suits both before you book. If your plans change, let Knox know so that the time can be offered to someone else.

How Knox handles this

Knox confirms its appointment requirements when a box is set up and when clients enquire about a visit. For visits that need preparation, such as a first visit, a new authorised user, joint access or an executor's attendance, Knox arranges a suitable time and confirms what the visitor should bring. On arrival, Knox verifies the visitor's identity before access.
