Business, Estates and Practical Questions

Can I store valuables while travelling or renovating my home?

The short answer

Yes, many people place jewellery, documents, coins and heirlooms in secure storage while they travel or while builders, contractors and movers are in their home. A safe deposit box suits small items, while larger pieces may suit shared storage or a private room. Check the rental period, how you will access items and what insurance applies while they are away from home.

Why temporary storage helps

Homes are often most exposed when they are empty or full of strangers. Long trips, renovations, house moves and property sales all mean more people coming and going, unlocked rooms and valuables packed in boxes. Moving small, high-value items to secure storage for that period reduces the chance of theft, loss or accidental damage.

How short-term storage generally works

You choose an option that suits the volume of items, complete the provider's identification and agreement process, and place the items in storage before the trip or works begin. When you return, you collect them under the provider's access procedure. If you will be away for a long time, consider nominating an authorised person who can reach the box if something unexpected happens.

What depends on Knox and what depends on your plans

Knox sets the rental periods, the access procedure and the options available for larger items. The minimum rental period is one year, payable by monthly debit order or annually in advance. There is no maximum term, and short-term rentals can be arranged on request in special circumstances. Your plans shape the right choice: how long you will be away, whether you might need documents such as passports or title deeds while travelling, how much you are storing, and whether your household insurer needs to be told that items have moved.

What to prepare and what to do next

  • A list and photographs of what you are storing.
  • Copies of any documents you may need while away.
  • Details of anyone you want to authorise for access.
  • Your household or all-risks insurance details.

Contact Knox well before your departure or start date so the box or storage can be set up in time.

How Knox handles this

Knox first confirms the appropriate box size or storage option, the rental period, the access arrangement and the applicable insurance option. The customer completes the required identification and agreement process, and nominates any authorised users, before access is activated. Access is only available during Knox's confirmed operating hours, and urgent requests outside these hours cannot be accepted because the vault's time locks are in operation. Knox explains how to arrange the return of items when you come back and what to do if your plans change.
