Is the Knox facility monitored 24 hours a day?

The short answer

Round-the-clock monitoring generally means that alarm, camera and access-control signals are watched by trained people at all hours, including the times when a facility is closed to clients. The facility is monitored 24 hours a day from an on-site Cortac control room, with armed guards on site around the clock, 24/7 surveillance and links to multiple armed response providers. Monitoring is one layer of protection. It does not change the hours when you can reach your box, and it does not replace insurance.

What continuous monitoring usually involves

A monitored facility has security systems that send alerts and images to people whose job is to watch them and act. Depending on the design, this may happen in a control room on site, at an off-site monitoring centre, or both. The aim is that unusual activity is noticed and responded to whether the building is open or closed.

Why the details stay confidential

Responsible facilities describe monitoring in general terms only. Camera positions, staffing levels, shift patterns and response arrangements are not published, because they would help someone planning an attack. You can expect a clear explanation of the principle, not a map of the system, and a provider that keeps these details private is protecting your property as well as everyone else's.

Monitoring is not the same as access

A facility can be watched at all hours while client access is limited to set times or appointments. That separation is deliberate: fewer access windows mean fewer opportunities for something to go wrong. Knox is open Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 17:00. Access is only available during confirmed operating hours: Knox cannot accept urgent requests outside them, because the vault's time locks are in operation.

Monitoring and your privacy

Being monitored in vault areas is normal, and visits may be recorded as part of security procedures. Those records concern who entered and when; they are not a way of inspecting what is in your box. You are entitled to ask how visit records and footage are handled, who may see them and how long they are kept, as part of the protection of your personal information.

Asking about monitoring during a visit

If monitoring matters to your decision, raise it when you view the facility, together with the access process and insurance terms. The answers should give you a clear picture of how the site is protected without revealing anything that would weaken that protection.

How Knox handles this

Knox describes how the facility is monitored during a visit, in general terms that do not compromise security. The team can also explain how monitoring relates to access hours, visit records and the protection of your personal information. Specific operational details, including staffing, camera layouts and response arrangements, are kept confidential for the protection of all clients and their property.
