Box Pricing and Contracts

Can I downgrade to a smaller box?

The short answer

Often you can, but the timing and cost depend on the agreement. Moving to a smaller box usually means transferring your contents to a new box and updating the agreement. If you are partway through a paid or fixed rental period, the saving may apply only from renewal, and some agreements limit changes during a term. An admin fee applies when you move to a larger or smaller box. Bring both of your keys to Knox and the change is done the same day, with your rental updated to the price of the new box size.

Why people downgrade

Needs change. You may have sold bullion, handed heirlooms to family, moved documents to an attorney or simply found that a smaller box would do. Downgrading can reduce the rental, but it involves the same practical steps as any change of box.

How a downgrade generally works

  1. Check that everything you want to keep in the box will fit the smaller size, including its weight limit.
  2. Confirm with Knox that a smaller box is available and when the change can take effect.
  3. Attend in person to move the contents into the new box in private.
  4. Sign the updated agreement and return or cancel anything issued for the old box.

Timing, refunds and credits

The financial effect depends on the agreement. If you have paid for a period in advance, or committed to a fixed term, the lower rental may only start at renewal, and any partial refund or credit is a matter for Knox's terms. Ask how the change affects any promotion linked to your current box. The rules for moving to a smaller box are Knox policy and can differ from those for upgrades.

Before you decide

Measure the items you plan to keep and compare them with the smaller box's internal dimensions. If you are removing high-value items, take them directly to their next secure location, and update your own record of what is stored. If you expect your needs to grow again, weigh the saving against the inconvenience of upgrading later.

How Knox handles this

Knox confirms when a smaller box can be allocated under the client's agreement and explains any effect on fees, credits or promotions. Once the client agrees, Knox prepares the updated agreement and the client moves the contents into the new box in private. Knox then closes the previous box and records the change, keeping the client's authorised users in place unless instructed otherwise.
