What safe deposit box sizes are available?

The short answer

Safe deposit boxes at Knox come in a range of sizes, from slim boxes suited to documents and small jewellery to deeper boxes for bullion, watch cases and larger collections. Knox offers eight box sizes: AA, and A to G. Sizes differ mainly in internal dimensions and maximum weight, and some sizes can be in limited supply, so check current dimensions and availability before you decide.

How box sizes are described

Safe deposit box sizes are usually described by their internal width, depth and height, together with a maximum weight. In many vaults, boxes share a similar footprint and differ mainly in height, so a deeper box holds bulkier items rather than wider ones. The internal measurements are what count, because the box walls and any lid take up part of the external size.

Knox's current range

Knox sets its own range of sizes and may change it over time. The current internal dimensions and weight limits are published by Knox. The internal dimensions and maximum weight for each size are in the table below. Availability of individual sizes can vary, so a size you want may be in limited supply at times.

Matching sizes to what you store

As a rough guide to thinking about space:

  • Flat items such as certificates, title deeds and wills need a box long and wide enough to hold them without folding, but little height.
  • Jewellery in soft pouches, a few coins or small items fit modest boxes; jewellery kept in original presentation cases takes far more space.
  • Watches in their boxes, coin tubes, bars and bundled documents need more height.
  • Heavier items such as bullion are limited by the box's weight rating as much as by its volume.

Seeing the sizes before you choose

Measurements on paper can be hard to picture. A facility visit lets you see the boxes, and bringing a list of what you plan to store, with rough measurements, helps the team suggest a size. If your needs change later, ask how upgrades or downgrades work, because moving to a different size usually means moving to a different box.

How Knox handles this

Knox shows the client the current box sizes and their internal dimensions, and confirms which sizes are available. Using the client's description of what will be stored, the team suggests a suitable size and explains the price of each option. The client then completes the identification and agreement process for the chosen box before access is activated.
