On Thursday, 19 September 2025, a fire broke out at the Cydna Substation, knocking out power to Sandton, Houghton Estate, and many of Johannesburg’s northern suburbs. The blaze left neighborhoods, offices and businesses, including Melrose, Killarney, Houghton, Oaklands, Norwood, Waverly, Highlands North, Bramley, Illovo, Atholl, and Rivonia in the dark.
As reported by Eyewitness News, City Power expected restoration by Sunday evening. But Monday came and went — and large sections of the area remained without electricity.
While many offices shut their doors, and retail operations ground to a halt, Knox Safe Custody remained open, secure, and fully operational.
