The coin was debuted in 1988. On the reverse side of the coin, the sugar maple leaf is displayed, which is seen as an iconic symbol of Canada and is home to the great north. The maple leaf is resilient and can be found throughout the country, which has a diverse range of species. The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Susanna Blunt.
