What Krugerrand sizes can I buy?
The short answer
Gold Krugerrands are made in four bullion sizes: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz, each containing that weight of fine gold. There is also a 1 oz silver Krugerrand. Which sizes you can buy at a given time depends on stock. Smaller coins cost less each, but they usually carry a higher premium per ounce of gold.
The bullion sizes
- 1 oz: one troy ounce of fine gold, the standard size.
- 1/2 oz: half a troy ounce of fine gold.
- 1/4 oz: a quarter of a troy ounce of fine gold.
- 1/10 oz: a tenth of a troy ounce of fine gold, the smallest bullion size.
- 1 oz silver: one troy ounce of fine silver.
How coin size affects what you pay
Part of the cost of making, packaging and distributing a coin is much the same whatever its size, so that cost is spread over less gold in a small coin. That is why fractional coins usually carry a higher premium per ounce than the 1 oz coin. The gap between the selling price and the buy-back price can also be proportionally wider on smaller coins.
Why people choose smaller or larger coins
Smaller coins make it possible to buy gold in smaller amounts, and to sell part of a holding later without selling a whole ounce. Larger coins are more cost-efficient per ounce of gold. Some buyers hold a mix, but the right balance depends on your budget and plans, and a financial adviser can help you weigh it.
What Knox currently stocks
Knox offers gold Krugerrands in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz sizes, as well as the 1 oz silver Krugerrand.
Stock levels change, particularly for fractional coins, and some dealers offer the 1 oz coin both as a current-year coin and as a mixed-year coin at different prices. Check the live pricing page or ask Knox before you visit, and compare the price per ounce of fine gold across sizes rather than only the price per coin.
