Safe Deposit Boxes

What is a safe deposit box?

The short answer

A safe deposit box is a locked metal container that you rent inside a professionally secured vault. You keep ownership of whatever you place in it, while the provider controls the building, the vault and the access procedure. People use boxes for jewellery, coins, documents and other small items they would rather not keep at home.

What a safe deposit box actually is

A safe deposit box is a small, lockable compartment set into a bank of boxes inside a vault. You rent the use of a box for an agreed period. The provider looks after the building, the vault and the procedures that control who may enter, while the items inside remain the property of their owner, which is usually you.

How using a box generally works

You choose a box size, sign a rental agreement and complete identity verification. The provider records who is authorised to access the box. When you visit, your identity is checked, you are taken into the vault area and the box is opened using the agreed key or verification procedure. Most providers give you a private area in which to add or remove items.

What depends on the provider and what depends on you

Each provider sets its own sizes, rental terms, access hours, insurance options and rules on prohibited items. What suits you depends on how much you need to store, how often you need access, the value of the items and whether anyone else should be able to reach the box if you cannot.
  • Know roughly what you want to store and how much space it takes.
  • Decide who, if anyone, should be an authorised user.
  • Ask how insurance works, what it excludes and what records you should keep.

What to do next

Compare the size and access arrangements you need with what the provider offers, and read the agreement before you sign. If you are considering Knox, the team can show you the available box sizes and explain the agreement during a facility visit.

How Knox handles this

Knox first confirms the appropriate box size, access arrangement and applicable insurance option. The customer completes the required identification and agreement process, and nominates any authorised users, before access is activated. Knox also explains which items may not be kept in a box, how cover applies and what happens to access if the client becomes unable to visit or passes away.
