What can I store in a Knox safe deposit box?
The short answer
Most small, lawfully owned valuables can be kept in a safe deposit box, including jewellery, watches, coins and bullion, original documents, heirlooms, collectables and digital storage devices. What you can store in practice is limited by the box's size and weight capacity, the items the agreement prohibits, and how insurance treats each type of item. Regulated items such as firearms need a separate, lawful arrangement.
Items people commonly store
- Jewellery, watches and gemstones that are not worn every day.
- Krugerrands, other bullion coins and small bars.
- Wills, title deeds, share certificates and other original documents.
- Heirlooms, medals, stamps and small collectables.
- Encrypted hard drives, memory cards and hardware wallets.
Practical limits: size, weight and access
Each box has internal dimensions and a maximum weight, which matters for bullion bars and boxed watches. Measure bulky items, including their cases, before choosing a size. The internal dimensions and maximum weight for each size are in the table below. Think about access too: a box suits items you need occasionally, not things you use every week.
What the agreement does not allow
Box agreements prohibit items that are illegal, dangerous or likely to damage the vault or other clients' property, such as explosives, flammable or corrosive substances, perishables and stolen goods. Firearms and ammunition are strictly regulated under the Firearms Control Act, so they need a specific, lawful custody arrangement rather than being treated like other valuables. Ask Knox before bringing any firearm or ammunition to the facility.
How insurance treats different items
Being allowed to store an item is not the same as being insured for it. Cash, bullion, jewellery, documents and art can each be treated differently, with their own limits or conditions. The box insurance covers items of intrinsic value such as jewellery, coins, bank notes, securities and certificates, but cash is covered only up to the amount in the policy schedule. Insurance for items held in safe custody outside a safe deposit box (such as art, trunks and large items) works differently: it is based on the potential value of each item, so Knox confirms the cover for your items before intake.
Planning what goes into your box
Make a list of what you want to store, with approximate sizes and values. Ask Knox to confirm that each type of item is acceptable, which box size fits, and how insurance applies to the total. If anything on your list is unusual, ask before you bring it, and keep a copy of the list somewhere other than the box.
